1. LEARN: In some parts of the ocean plastic bits outnumber plankton by a ratio of 6 to 1. Sea turtles and other ocean animals eat the plastic and get sick or die.

People can make promises to change to world, and with promises come action. Did you know that there are specific actions - not big ones, but small, purposeful decisions to make the world a little better. Together, we can make it a lot better.

WEAR YOUR SUPPORT ON YOUR SLEEVE - Or, at least, your jacket.
The Five Actions are five different but connected campaigns that progressive groups have put together for anyone to participate in. You can choose to become active in one, or two, or all of them if you wish - and we encourage it! For the first 50 participants who submit a video showing the completion of any one of our Five Actions will receive a CUSTOM LAPEL PIN of our corresponding Action Badges designed by renowned street artist Shepard Fairey. When you have completed an action, go to the ACTION PARTICIPANTS page and post a response (see below).

The ACTIONS

Virgin Forests: Greenpeace presents KLEERCUT, a campaign for preserving ancient trees and promoting the use of recycled material in disposable paper products.

Wild Oceans: Ocean Revolution presents RISE ABOVE PLASTIC, a campaign for preventing pollution and protecting the health of sea turtles and ocean wildlife.

Safe Food: Organic Consumers presents MILLIONS AGAINST MONSANTO, a campaign against corporations' exploitation of small farms and erroneous claims to copyright ownership of forms of life.

Art in Action

The Art in Action Youth Leadership Program uplifts and transforms the lives of young artists impacted by violence and poverty. Our annual summer camps and year-round programs create hope and opportunity through socially relevant popular education, community-building, and creative expression geared toward developing solutions. Art in Action provides a supportive, positive place for young leaders to cultivate leadership through dance, theater, music, spoken word/poetry, painting, storytelling, and media arts.

Involvement in the Seattle Protest

Helped to put together the first "Shut it Down" postcard which mobilized thousands across the country to come to Seattle.

Co-coordinated the pre-training with Ruckus Society leading up with hundreds of people north of Seattle.

Put together an educational theater road show up and down the West Coast to plug people into the campaign, and to both inspire and train them in giant puppet-building, non-violence and media messaging. On the tour we traveled with Bay Area artists, a locked-out steel worker from Spokane, WA and a former sweatshop worker from the Philippines. We performed original songs and dances about the WTO, which became part of the culture in Seattle that winter.

Organized a festival in the streets in San Francisco the previous June, where we premiered the WTO octopus puppet, which depicted the unconstitutional institution's multi-faceted tentacles of corporate-corruption.

Art and Revolution helped to provide a model of decentralized leadership where workers, students, people of faith, environmentalists, artists, social justice advocates, farmers and more were able to plug into a mass action in such a way that empowered their voices, tactics and mission. With a place for everyone, and not one person handing down orders, we succeeded in creating a model for mass mobilizing where various groups could leverage each other and work for the common good. We were, and still are committed to preserving the earth, while uplifting our people through creativity and mutual empowerment.

THE FIVE STEPS

1. SIGN the Millions Against Monsanto petition.

2. GET Home Depot to do the right thing and tell them to DUMP Monsanto's RoundUp!

3. TELL your legislators to say NO to Monsanto and send a prepared letter to your local representative. You can also check if your legislators have previously accepted contributions from Monsanto.

4. SEND a letter to the editor of your local newspaper and let the world know that consumer pressure campaigns work!

The Letter to the Editor Section is one of the most widely read sections of the newspaper and can reach a large audience. It allows community members to comment on the way issues are being addressed in the media and to influence the topics the local paper may choose to cover. Elected officials often monitor this section of the newspaper and take notice of constituents' opinions. Spread the hope!

5. STOP Monsanto's GE Sugar Beet and BOYCOTT Kellogg's and Morningstar Farms Products.

Monsanto Corporation's RoundUp Ready Genetically Engineered Sugar Beet is designed to withstand massive doses of toxic weed killers. Roughly half of all processed foods contain sugar from sugar beets. Monsanto's GE sugar beets will expose millions of consumers to untested and unlabeled "Franken Foods" that threaten human heath, the environment and farmers' rights everywhere. Candy companies like Hershey's are urging farmers not to plant GE sugar beets, noting that consumer surveys suggest resistance to the product. In addition the European Union has not approved GE sugar beets for human consumption. Read more about GE sugar beets here.

FAIR TRADE CAMPAIGN

Why Fair Trade?
Fair Trade is the alternative to the misbegotten trade policies we condemned in Seattle. Fair Trade certification empowers democratically-organized farmer cooperatives to escape poverty, while protecting workers and the environment. Participants in Global Exchange’s Fair Trade campaign support these courageous farmers from some of the remotest spots on the planet, who are standing up against exploitation by transforming trade, one cocoa or coffee bean at a time!

How do I help?
Take action by Reverse Trick-or-Treating! On Halloween, kids (and adults!) on their trick-or-treating rounds will give chocolate back to every household. Promote Fair Trade by handing out Fair Trade certified chocolate attached to a card informing your neighbors about exploitation in the cocoa industry, including forced child labor, and how Fair Trade provides an alternative.

THE FIVE STEPS

1. REQUEST your FREE Reverse Trick-or-Treating kit! (Order now! Last year we ran out weeks before Halloween! Deadline for individual kits is October 13; the deadline for groups, such as schools, congregations, and youth groups, is October 1.) Each kit consists of 20-25 pieces of Fair Trade chocolate and information cards.

2. USE our email tool to invite friends and relatives with kids to sign up for Reverse Trick-or-Treating, too!

3. DREAM up a FUN costume! You're still a trick-or-treater!

4. Trick-or-Treating with kids? READ Global Exchange’s Fair Trade Cocoa Book to your kids a day or two before Trick-or-Treating, to help them understand social justice issues in the cocoa industry and the significance of taking action for Fair Trade.

5. GO door to door on Halloween and hand each household you visit a card with some Fair Trade chocolate! When you’re done, savor your accomplishment over a cup of Fair Trade hot cocoa!

THE CAMPAIGN TO STOP JUNK MAIL
Junk mail does more than waste our time and invade our privacy: it also contributes to global warming and causes the destruction of Endangered Forests.

In 2003, Congress created the national Do Not Call Registry, the most popular consumer rights bill in history. Today, we need a comparable registry to end the onslaught of junk mail. Our goal is to establish a national registry—modeled after the landmark Do Not Call Registry—that will give us the choice to stop unwanted junk mail from entering our homes.

We're collecting names on a petition (65,000 and counting) to show our government and the direct mail industry that we want a national registry to give us an easy and comprehensive way to opt out of junk mail. We're also supporting state initiatives that will establish Do Not Mail registries for their citizens.

It's time we told junk mailing companies to stop junk mail. It's time to take our mailboxes back.

Oil Change USA

Oil Change USA is dedicated to exposing and countering Big Oil influence in our government.

WHO IS OC USA?

Steve Kretzmann, Executive Director
Veteran oil campaigner and direct action communications specialist Steve Kretzmann arrived in Seattle direct from solidarity work with communities in Colombia and Nigeria. After speaking at several fora drawing the connections between these struggles and the multinational powers that be gathered in Seattle, he hit the streets to help with communications. Arrested in the mass free-speech free zone on Dec 1st, he spent 5 days in jail that remain among the happiest of his life.

Nadine Bloch, Organizing Director
Longtime activist, puppet maker, trainer and artist Nadine Bloch worked with the Direct Action Network (DAN) and the Ruckus Society in organizing the WTO protests. In Seattle for the Ruckus Action Camp in Sept 1999, and then for a month prior to the actions, Nadine facilitated workshops, spokecouncils & trainings, production of puppets & props ( the famously gagged giant puppet was part of that work), and action coordination from marches to blockades, comms to tactical support. Arrested in the mass free-speech free zone on Dec 1st, she spent 5 days in jail with the best of them.

STOP BIG OIL CAMPAIGN

The resistance to the WTO did not begin and end in Seattle in 1999; in fact, the fight started years before & continues on many fronts; against war and warming and corporate control of our political systems and for a transition to a just, green and peaceful future.

The only way to bring on more victories for the people, to address the most critical issues of our time - war & warming - is if YOU jump on in! Oil Change USA and the Separate Oil & State campaign are poised on the brink of pushing real change targeting Big Oil money in our so-called democracy: with your help, we can tie this up too!

SmartMeme builds movements and amplifies the impact of grassroots organizing with new strategy and training resources, values based communications, collaborations, and meme campaigning. SmartMeme uses the power of narrative to advance a holistic vision of grassroots social change that connects struggles for democracy, peace, justice, and ecological sanity

The founding of the SmartMeme project was inspired in large part by the momentum of Seattle and the subsequent mass global justice actions. Members of our collective were deeply involved in the lead up organizing and mass action planning and supported the protests with tactical, video, and media support. The actions showed the need for activists to take the fight against the ideology of free trade and corporate globalization beyond the streets of Seattle and into the public debate. SmartMeme was formed to develop strategies and tools to help our movements for change win the battle of the story around key issues like corporate globalization.

SmartMeme continues to challenge free trade and the corporate take over by supporting campaigns for real democracy, farmworker justice, ending the occupation of Iraq and environmental protection.

To add a link, simply type in the word, phrase or sentence - highlight it and press the link button in the "Easy Edit Toolbar." Pressing the link button will automatically open the box that you will send the link to. Add the URL and press the "Add Link" button.

When you're done, hit "Save" and you'll see it on the newly edited page!

Greenpeace is an independent campaigning organization that uses peaceful direct action and creative confrontation to expose global environmental problems and promote solutions that are essential to a green and peaceful future. The Kleercut campaign is focused on ending Kimberly-Clark’s destruction of ancient forests, including the North American Boreal forest, for disposable products like Kleenex tissue and Cottonelle toilet paper.

The Kleercut campaign is focused on ending Kimberly-Clark’s destruction of ancient forests, including the North American Boreal forest, for disposable products like Kleenex tissue and Cottonelle toilet paper.

Kimberly-Clark is the largest tissue company in the world, known for brands like Kleenex, Scott, Cottonelle, Viva, Kotex, Depend, Huggies and PullUps. Instead of using recycled content to make products they use virgin fiber from ancient forests. Critical in helping to regulate our climate and home to caribou, bear, moose, lynx, and wolverine, the North American Boreal forest is under threat because of Kimberly-Clark’s appetite for virgin trees. It’s time for Kimberly-Clark to stop wiping away ancient forests for toilet paper and tissue.

THE FIVE STEPS

1. SCOUR your home, office or public restroom for any Kimberly-Clark products.

2. CUT out the UPC label(s) or part of the packaging and WRITE a personal message to Kimberly-Clark. For example: “This box of Kleenex tissue is last Kimberly-Clark product I’ll buy until you use recycled content instead of ancient forests!"

3. SEND the UPC label and note to:

4. CONSIDER this the first step in wiping Kimberly-Clark out of your life. REPLACE Kimberly-Clark brands with alternatives high in recycled content.

5. HELP us fight for forests by finding Kimberly-Clark products elsewhere in your life. PUSH to have local libraries, schools, and businesses replace Kleenex and other Kimberly-Clark brands with recycled alternatives.
